Christina Deloma is Out on the Town at Zen Culinary!

Located in North Scottsdale Right off the 101 and Frank Lloyd Wright Zen Culinary is a fabulous night out. They pulled out all the stops for the soft opening which is ideal because diners can get a serious taste of what the restaurant is all about. It’s not every day I eat a 9 plus course dinner with three drinks just for me (don’t worry I wasn’t driving) with two of my greatest friends who are down for a good time. Shout out to Kathleen and Erin Manahan for being exquisite dinner guests.

Ambiance
Tranquil with the running water feature outside and the lush green wall, Zen Culinary has the traditional feel of an upscale Asian restaurant. The red and black color scheme give an intimate dining vibe while the smooth interior is very inviting with a swanky feel.

Drinks
What a selection. We all raved about our drinks. They were strong, not the type of strong where it feels like straight alcohol is being poured inside and the esophagus is being burned slowly. Strong in the sense that I ordered a Gin based drink. Tasted Gin. Felt Gin. Enjoyed the taste other juices that complemented the Gin. Made a fous pax because I ordered a “Happy Ending” but the real name is a “Happy Beginning”. Yep. I’m that person. One time I ordered a “Sex on a Playa” like “Player” but with an “a”. Told my roommate Kelly about it and she pointed out it was “playa” like the Spanish word for “beach”. Sex on a Beach. The common drink. Yeah.

Menu
Perfect portion size. Our game plan was family style dining and it worked well. There was plenty of food so that we all had a little bit of this and a little bit of that. I would suggest it because they have so many yummy dishes it is worth trying them all. It was one of those meals where out of the gate the food was tasty, but you try to hold off and not eat it all. There was this peanut dipping sauce that was SO DELICIOUS that we hid it behind our gifts on the table to keep it the rest of the night. The sushi got high marks from Erin and Kathleen (not a sushi fan myself). The entrees were…something to write home about. I was telling the girls that when I finally get a second or third date, that’s after getting the first one, I’m having him take me here. It’s holiday date worthy, but I’m a sucker for fancy things. The dessert was a show stopping Chocolate Cake. I’m telling you, they could shut down the entire operation and only sell that cake and they would be in business forever. I know chocolate cake and this was how chocolate cake is supposed to taste.

Highlights
Chicken Skewers appetizer, pad thai served with forbidden rice in a split pineapple, sushi, steak and chocolate cake. Most influential was the peanut dipping sauce for the appetizer. DANG it was good. Pour it over cardboard and it would turn into a five star meal.

Rating: 5 Stars. Seriously. I’m not easily impressed, but this was a fantastic night out. Take me back to Zen Culinary and I’d be a happy girl.
